Top 5 Fantasy Movies/Series

Woops! I forgot to do this last night. Sorry everyone, I will get better. This class I just started is kicking my ass and the workload is very heavy. If you didn’t see my Halloween costume, go to either social media channel to check it out. It was so much fun.

Anyway since there is a little more prose available on here now, and this post is a day late, I figured I’d share some more favorites!

  1. Lord of the Rings (entire trilogy) – Does anything really need to be said about this? It’s so good. Anytime it pops up on Netflix I watch it through. The Hobbit trilogy is okay, but in terms of cinematography and tone it just doesn’t hold a candle to LOTR, in my humble opinion.
  2. Game of Thrones – Excellence. I enjoy the series as a whole despite the dreaded season 8. Instead of getting into what’s wrong with it, I’d rather talk about what’s right. Even in season 8 some things really delivered: Cleganebowl, Arya (let’s be real everything Arya does is great), and some of the shots like Drogon’s wings behind Dany are so dramatic and amazing.
  3. Avatar: The Last Airbender – Possibly one of my favorite stories of all time. The themes, and world-building, personal stakes, flawed protagonist, good antagonist (Zuko, not Ozai), beautiful characters development, and so much more. I feel like I could talk forever about the quality of this cartoon. Korra is also good, but Airbender is just such a high echelon. Also it is one of Mark Hamill’s best and most underrated voice acting performances as Ozai.
  4. Shadow and Bone – A newish one for me, as I started watching earlier this year. I haven’t read the books yet, but the show is excellent. It has all the density of world-building that Game of Thrones has, with a fabulous steam-punk vibe. In the immortal words of Donna Meagle, like GoT, “everybody on that show can get it.”
  5. Chrono Trigger – I know this is a video game, but if any fantasy game deserves to be on this list, it’s Chrono Trigger. Excellent story and characters, high stakes, great magic, beautiful soundtrack, and so much more. For an SNES game to be this complex is a marvel to me. I believe there is a remastered version for Nintendo Switch or some such device, so if you haven’t played, do yourself a favor and get the game. “The black wind begins to blow…”

Thanks for reading! I’ve been working on another short story for the Realms of Sciath series free on this website, so stay tuned for that.

Stay spooky!
