Character Sketch

Hello Readers!

First, sorry this is a day late. I forgot about it completely when I came home from work last night. Please don’t stop following me because I’m a day late!

Onto the main event! I’ve been planning a series of fantasy short stories to be published here on my website. For a little context, it takes place on a continent called “Sciath.” There are several realms within the continent and I want to do an anthology vibe. They may happen at different times, in a nonlinear way. There will be some staple characters that appear throughout many of them. I also want to write most if not all of the stories in the gothic style – meaning the story is told through letters, diary entries, etc. (Think Dracula, or Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde).

As for this character, I don’t yet entirely know what this story is, though I have a vague idea. This is a preliminary sketch for a young wizard named Intarius Raelduûn. I actually made this character up a long time ago, but he was a wise, old, sage type of wizard. As I got to thinking about what would serve for good story telling, I thought it might be neat to look at what he did as a young man. I fully intend to continue to develop this sketch a little more, but I wanted to share with you all! Here you go!

Name: Intarius Raelduûn

Physical Description: A young man in his twenties, tall and slim. His hair is dark and short, and he sports a goatee that draws to a point on his chin. He wears three gold rings on his right hand, each on a different finger. He wears long flowing purple robes with red detailing, the standard of the Cabal of Arinthe.

Personality: He is determined and smart, having studied magic at the Cabal since he was a small child. He is reserved, sincere, and pragmatic. Myers-Briggs: ISTJ.

Family History: The son of a wealthy merchant in Arinthe, he, like most Cabal students, was discovered to possess magic abilities as a young child. He has lived in the Cabal since 5, though is able to maintain correspondence with his father, and mother, who still live in Arinthe, and maintain their mercantile professions.

Personal Conflicts: He feels a need to prove himself. Despite achieving good marks in his studies at the Cabal, he is anxious to graduate from his acolyte status and make his mark as a great wizard. The Cabal is very competitive among students, and as a quiet student feels a degree of imposter syndrome.

Character Sketch Questions:

Who are your character’s friends? Who are the people your character is closest to? Who does he wish he was closer to? His best friend is a fellow student, Farthior Marlingdew, a half-elf from the small town of Alastin. He remains close to his father despite not seeing him often. He wishes he was closer to Lyra Braceguard, another student, daughter of a noble house of Arinthe, and gifted wizard.

What is his biggest fear? Who has he told this to? Who would he never tell this to? Why?

His biggest fear is that he’ll fail his upcoming advancement test. The advancement test also helps the Cabal decide their mage placements, and if he does poorly, he’ll get a bad placement. He has told this to Farthior and his parents but would never tell Lyra.

What is one strong memory that has stuck with your character from childhood? Why is it so powerful and lasting?

The first time he saw Lyra. They were both around ten years old when they came to live at the Cabal. For Intarius, it was love at first sight, though he is too shy to speak to her much.

Look at your character’s feet. Describe what you see there.

The standard purple and red shoes of the Cabal. Simple leather shoes, designed for comfort and durability.
