Hi! I know the next post should be next week, but I thought this would be quick and fun! Stay tuned for next week’s post, I’m thinking I might read and review another author’s work (not a rude criticism or anything like that, that’s not me). If there are things you readers would like to see, please feel free to comment on my “Feed” page, in a post, over social media, or email me directly! Anyway, Let’s talk sci-fi movies!
#1 Star Wars: (can I pick the whole franchise?) Return of the Jedi
I might catch some guff for this but if I have to pick just one, I have to go with Jedi. Anakin is a very complex character. Is he a drama king? Yes. However, I think his return to the light is so meaningful. It goes to show you no matter how far you may fall, redemption is still possible. Plus who doesn’t want a speeder bike?
#2 The Matrix (can I again pick the whole franchise?)
In picking just one, I’d go for the first one. Not only was it visually revolutionary, but the story is amazing, and Keanu Reeves, who is a national treasure. Top that off with themes of identity, and challenging authority, and you’ve got a heck of sci-fi franchise.
#3 Serenity (Come on, let me pick the whole franchise!)
This continuation of the Firefly TV show is just plain excellent. It’s a great space western that also includes themes like challenging authority. The characters are super deep and rich. I, like many other fans, wish they would bring the show back.
#4 Equilibrium
This flick is great! More challenging of authority (is this a pattern of me? or sci-fi?) Christian Bale is awesome in this movie and the whole pill to control emotions thing has serious implications in the real world.
#5 District 9
It was tough to make a last pick, but this film’s criticism of apartheid in South Africa is incredible. Sci-fi is supposed to challenge the status quo and draw attention to the real problems that plague humanity. This film does that in such an excellent way, and shows what compassion means to the people who are victims of oppression.
I wish I could go on and on, but I promised I would keep it to five. Honorable mentions: Terminator, Elysium, Fahrenheit 451 (super relevant right now).
I will say I am also psyched for Andy Serkis’ upcoming Animal Farm!
